Following concerns raised about the discharging of wastewater into the Sabeto River on 22nd May 2025, the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change have confirmed that both agencies immediately conducted water sampling along the Sabeto River and preliminary test results show water quality in the affected stretch of the upper Sabeto River has returned to safe levels for all normal uses.
In a statement released by both Ministries, they say they acknowledge the concerns of communities and stakeholders and are treating the incident with urgency and transparency.
They say while the full investigation report is still pending, as a precautionary measure, treated water should not be consumed due to livestock activity along riverbanks.
They add that as a precaution, all wastewater discharge from the settlement pond has been suspended, which was identified as the source.
The Ministries say this will remain in place until full compliance with relevant regulatory standards is demonstrated.
They say the resumption of any liquid waste discharge will strictly be subject to the conditions of the Ministry of Environment’s Liquid Waste Discharge Permit.
They say the Ministry of Environment will continue to work closely with Lion One to ensure strict adherence to environmental conditions while operating and supporting the livelihoods of its workers.
A full-scale investigation is underway, including sampling, and staff interviews, and a thorough review of discharge systems is in progress.
Both ministries will jointly conduct environmental audits over the next six months to enforce long-term improvements in the company’s practices.
Lion One has accepted full responsibility and is implementing key improvements which include the establishment of a new pre-treatment facility, enhanced monitoring, and direct engagement with communities.
A full report is expected to be released upon the conclusion of all assessments.
