A 69-year-old grandmother will be able to see her 5-year-old granddaughter again after receiving life-changing cataract surgery through the China (Guangdong) "Bright Journey" to Fiji mission.

Varomue Marans says she began losing her vision in July and it gradually worsened to the point where she could no longer see, prompting her to seek help from eye specialists.

She says she is grateful for the free surgery as it allows her to spend more quality time with her granddaughter.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Marans explains that it was challenging for her to be outside, as she often required someone to guide and assist her.

Marans surgery was performed by the China’s National Health Commission, Foreign Medical Mission Chief Expert, Dr Chen Weirong.

Dr Weirong explains that each cataract procedure takes about 5 to 7 minutes, and medication used during the surgery prevents bleeding in the eyes.

The Chair of the Hospital Council at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre, Sun Yat-sen University, Dr Li Qiang says the mission is committed to restoring sight for over 100 more patients this week.

This year marks 10 years of the “Bright Journey” to Fiji and 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji.
