Schools to remain open tomorrow, parents urged to use discretion

Schools will operate as normal tomorrow, as Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and relevant divisional authorities, says that based on the latest assessments, the overall weather situation across Fiji remains stable.

He says parents and guardians may use their discretion when deciding whether to send their children to school, particularly in areas where weather conditions or travel routes may deteriorate overnight.

Radrodro says that while the country continues to experience periods of heavy rain, strong winds in some areas, rough sea conditions, and unusually cold temperatures, consultations with the NDMO and divisional authorities have confirmed that there have been no reports of major flooding or significant disruptions affecting schools or surrounding communities.

He says although isolated cases of coastal flooding and rough sea conditions have been observed in parts of the Yasawa Group and the Eastern Division, these have not impacted critical infrastructure, school operations, or public access.

Radrodro says parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure that their children should not attempt to cross flooded roads, creeks, or rivers, to exercise caution when travelling, and to continue monitoring official weather updates and advisories.

Students are encouraged to wear warm clothing and bring an umbrella, as cold and wet weather conditions persist across the country.

The Education Minister says Heads of Schools are advised to remain in close communication with their Management Committees and District Education Offices and to continue monitoring local conditions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.

He stresses the safety and welfare of students, teachers, and families remain their highest priority.

The Ministry will continue to closely monitor the situation in consultation with the NDMO and relevant authorities and will provide further updates should conditions change.

Meanwhile, a heavy rain warning remains in force for the Fiji Group.

A strong wind warning remains in force for all land areas of Fiji.

A coastal inundation alert remains in force for the southern low-lying coastal areas of Yasawa, Mamanuca, Viti Levu (from Natadola through to Coral Coast to Navua), Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Moala and the Southern Lau Group.

An active trough of low pressure just to the west of Fiji is gradually moving eastwards towards Fiji.

Associated cloud and rain is already affecting Fiji and is expected to continue affecting the group until later tomorrow.
