There is a need to use the resources around you instead of waiting for assistance after any natural disaster.
These are the words of Karen Bernard, UNDP's Program Specialist for Natural Disaster Reduction and Transition.
Bernard said the community needs to get together and work on ideas about what to do soon after a disaster while waiting for help to arrive.
Bernard made the comments at the Gender, Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change workshop organised by the UNDP and the Social Welfare Ministry.
Meanwhile, a participant at the workshop Semi Masilomani said the Workshop has been an eye-opener.
He said there is a need to have gender equality in villages to see that work is done effectively.
The Workshop continues this afternoon.
