More than 50 patients will undergo open heart surgery in the next two weeks by the Open Heart Surgery team from the Sydney Adventist Hospital.
Health Media Liaison Officer Iliesa Tora said the team of 34 doctors and nurses started operating on their first patients at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital from today.
He said getting an open heart surgery overseas is expensive for the people here and having the team here is greatly appreciated.
Tora said altogether 51 patients in total with 28 adults and 23 children will undergo the surgery.
This is the team's 18th trip to Fiji in which they have operated on over 500 patients free of charge. The team leaves the country after two weeks.
