For thousands of Fijian families with loved ones living in Queensland, travelling between Fiji and Australia has just become easier.

The launch of Fiji Airways' inaugural direct flight between Nadi and the Gold Coast today marks a significant milestone not only for the national carrier but also for Fiji's growing economic and people-to-people ties with Australia.

Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka described the new route as far more than the launch of a new air route, saying it opens a new gateway of opportunity between Fiji and one of Australia's fastest-growing regions.

Rabuka says the new service will provide more than 53,000 seats annually between Fiji and the Gold Coast, creating easier access for tourists, business travellers, students and families travelling between the two destinations.

He says the direct connection will strengthen the renewed Vuvale Partnership between Fiji and Australia while supporting Fiji's long-term development goals under Vision 2050.

He says it is a gateway that strengthens our people-to-people ties, expand economic engagement and reflects the deepening relationship between Fiji and Australia.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the Gold Coast's status as one of Australia's most vibrant urban economies, known for its tourism sector, sporting culture and rapidly expanding population.

He says the direct route will eliminate the need for many travellers to transit through other Australian cities, making journeys simpler, faster and more convenient.

He adds that tourism remains a cornerstone of Fiji's economy, supporting thousands of jobs across hotels, resorts, transport, agriculture, retail businesses and community enterprises.

He says Australia continues to be Fiji's largest tourism market, with nearly half a million Australian visitors visiting Fiji last year.
