Trade on all scrap metal excluding gold has been suspended from today.
This includes copper, aluminum, nickel, silver, tin and lead.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Shaheen Ali said this is because of the deepening national crisis caused by the theft of public infrastructure sold as scrap metal.
Ali said the ministry has the power of licensing and enforcement has taken a lead role by forming a Compliance and Enforcement working group.
He said the recent thefts have caused major damage and expense to agencies like FEA, TFL and the Water Authority of Fiji which runs into millions of dollars.

The meeting of stakeholders include the Ministry of Defence, Police, Military, FRCA, TFL, FEA and Water Authority.
