Renowned sevens coach Mike Friday says the McDonald's Coral Coast Fiji 7s is one of the toughest and most respected invitational tournaments in the world, warning that reputations count for nothing on Fijian soil as his select side prepares for the 2026 edition.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Friday says his Mike Friday Select 7s squad “looks good on paper” but stressed that success in Fiji depends on far more than past accolades.

Friday says he expects an especially demanding weekend against local village sides, the Fijian national setup, and strong international invitational teams.

With several players new to the environment and limited preparation time, Friday says cohesion, adaptability and enjoying the moment will be critical.

Off the field, Friday emphasises the importance of embracing Fiji’s culture and community.

The team plans village visits and fan engagement, with players encouraged to connect with the people, traditions, and passionate supporters that define the Coral Coast Sevens experience.

Friday also praised the growth of the Coral Coast Sevens, describing it as a powerhouse international invitational that now rivals prestigious events such as the Dubai Invitational Sevens.

He highlighted its role in providing valuable opportunities for emerging nations and players to showcase their talent on a global stage.

The Coral Coast 7s is from Thursday to Saturday at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
