Lionel Messi's first-half strike has given Argentina a 1-0 lead over Algeria at halftime in their opening FIFA World Cup Group J clash.
The Argentine captain opened the scoring in the 17th minute, calmly finding the back of the net to put the South Americans ahead.
Argentina dominated much of the first half with Messi pulling the strings in midfield and creating several attacking opportunities as Algeria struggled to break through a disciplined Argentine defence.
Algeria attempted to respond with a number of attacking moves but were unable to find an equaliser before the break.
The Group J encounter remains finely poised heading into the second half, with Argentina looking to secure all three points while Algeria searches for a way back into the contest.
Meanwhile, France earlier defeated Senegal 3-1, while Norway beat Iraq 4-1.
Austria will take on Jordan at 4pm.
