A former Fiji resident Rohit Deepak Singh who was found guilty of the murder of his ex-girlfriend Arishma Chand in New Zealand has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum period of imprisonment of 19 years.

24‑year‑old Chand was killed during the early hours of November in 2017, after her ex‑boyfriend lay in wait at her Manurewa house with a large kitchen knife.

Rakesh and Aradhana Singh, Arishma's parents, discovered their daughter's body when they returned to their home.

Singh stalked his ex for year and broke into her home wearing gloves and wielding weapons.

The Crown prosecutors said the motive for the murder was Rohit Singh's obsession and infatuation with Arishma.

He was in a relationship with Arishma which ended in August 2016.

But he was obsessed and infatuated with Arishma and refused to accept she didn't want to be with him and it was this obsession which drove him to kill her.
