Tropical Cyclone Vaianu was located at 610 kilometres west-northwest of Yasawa and moving southwards at 9 kilometres per hour at 4am this morning.
The Nadi Weather Office says the trough of low pressure associated with TC Vaianu lies over Fiji, and associated cloud and rain are expected to affect the country for the next few days.
The cyclone is expected to continue moving south-southeast over the next 24 hours while intensifying.
The Weather Office says while the system remains north of Fiji, it is being closely monitored as it strengthens, and further updates will be issued as necessary.
Tropical Cyclone Vaianu currently has sustained winds of about 40 knots or 46 kilometres per hour near its centre, and is expected to intensify to around 50 knots or 57 kilometres per hour by later today.
The Weather Office says strong winds extend further out from the centre, especially on the eastern side.
The system is not expected to make landfall.
Meanwhile, a Heavy Rain Warning and a Flash Flood Alert remain in force for the whole of Fiji.
A Strong Wind Warning remains in force for the Northern Division, Yasawa and Mamanuca group, the western half of Viti Levu from Sigatoka, along the Coral Coast, through Nadi to Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.
A Strong Wind Alert is now in force for the rest of the country.
Possible impacts include flooding of drainage systems, small streams, low water bridges, Irish crossings, roads and properties in low-lying areas.
