30-year-old Sekove Tawake of Vatuwaqa and 30-year-old Sailosi Lakovi

30-year-old Sekove Tawake of Vatuwaqa and 30-year-old Sailosi Lakovi of Tacirua have been remanded in custody for a formal bail application, as both have pending matters.

They are alleged to have been involved in an attempted robbery in Tacirua on Saturday morning.
Both appeared before Nasinu Magistrate Deepika Prakash this afternoon.

Police Prosecutor Kaveni Tuisese objected to bail, stating that the matter is of public interest and that there is a likelihood that they may re-offend.

The defence counsel, who did not wish to be named, requested that the two men be kept at the Valelevu Police Station as they had sustained injuries while in custody and required a medical review.

Magistrate Prakash responded that the Remand Centre can facilitate the medical review.

She says that a police station is not a remand centre.

She also said that both have bench warrants against them in other matters.

The Police Prosecutor informed the Magistrate that partial disclosures have been served and that the caution interview needs to be translated.

However, the defence counsel told the court that his clients had informed him that the interview was not conducted.

Police Prosecutor Tuisese confirmed that, according to the summary of facts, both men had refused to be interviewed. Both have been charged with one count of attempted robbery, two counts of resisting arrest, and two counts of refusing to provide fingerprints.

It is alleged that the two men drove up to a family’s driveway with their faces covered and armed with cane knives and pinch bars in an attempt to steal from the home.

The matter will be called on January 6th.
