Strengthening protections and improving welfare support for Fijian workers overseas remain key priorities as the Government continues to refine its labour mobility programmes.

This has been highlighted by the Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh during the Labour Mobility Stakeholder Engagement Workshop held at the Suva Civic Centre.

Stakeholders gathered at the event to review progress and discuss ways to further improve support systems for workers participating in overseas employment schemes.

Singh acknowledged the sacrifices made by Fijians who leave their families to work abroad in countries such as Australia and New Zealand in order to support their loved ones and improve household livelihoods.

He says that since the current administration came into office, several improvements have been made to strengthen monitoring and welfare support for workers under the programme.

These include the appointment of four country liaison officers in Australia and one in New Zealand to assist workers and monitor their welfare while they are overseas.

He says the liaison officers are responsible for maintaining contact with workers, addressing concerns, and ensuring that employers comply with minimum standards relating to working conditions, accommodation and deductions.

Singh says the Government has also strengthened collaboration with agencies in Australia and New Zealand, including labour authorities and community organisations, to ensure workers receive adequate protection.

He emphasised that the programme aims to ensure workers return home with savings that can improve the living standards of their families and communities.

He adds many participants have already used their earnings to build homes, establish small businesses and contribute to development projects within their villages.

However, he acknowledged that challenges still exist, including unfair deductions, reduced working hours, high rental costs and instances where employers attempt to cut costs at the expense of workers.

Singh also stressed that such issues must continue to be addressed to ensure workers are treated fairly and receive the full benefits of the programme.
