Improved digital connectivity is beginning to transform life on Lakeba Island and Fulaga Island in Lau, with students among those benefiting from newly installed Starlink satellite kits in the Lau Group.

The installations were carried out by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, with support from the International Organization for Migration.

Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka says the initiative formed part of wider efforts to improve digital access in remote island communities.

Gavoka confirmed that two Starlink satellite internet packages were installed on Lakeba, one at the Lau Provincial Council Office and another at the Lakeba Health Centre, providing vital support for essential services and communications.

University of the South Pacific student, Mele Uluiqalau says the enhanced connectivity is already making a meaningful difference.

Uluiqalau says the installation will greatly benefit students pursuing education from remote islands.

Lakeba District representative, Kelepi Gucake who is also a retired serviceman who served with both the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police, described the installation as a major step forward for the island’s communication capabilities.

In the health sector, connectivity at the Lakeba Health Centre is expected to support medical professionals in delivering better care, enabling faster communication and access to medical information.

Meanwhile, Chief of Mission IOM Coordination Office for the South Pacific Solomon Kantha says the organisation was honoured to support island communities through improved digital access, strengthening communication and preparedness for emergencies, especially on Fulaga Island.

Fulaga District representative Ledua Finau says the installation also comes at a crucial time, as climate change increasingly impacts remote islands.
