Scabies is spreading widely among children as it thrives in Fiji’s tropical climate and due to close contact among students at home and in schools.
This was shared by dermatologist Dr Metuisela Tuicakau.
Dr Tuicakau says recent trends and reports received at various clinics show a high number of patients getting scabies.
He says they are working closely with health officials locally and globally to ensure medication is available at pharmacies.
He says that Ivermectin, a medication used around the world to treat the infection, is now available in Fiji and is provided free of charge.
Dr Tuicakau adds the drug is included on the country’s essential medicines list, ensuring public access.
He says treatment creams are also available at health centres.
Scabies is one of several neglected tropical diseases affecting Fiji, and others include lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, leprosy, and yaws.
He says Fiji has eliminated trachoma as a public health concern.
Dr Tuicakau is encouraging parents to seek medical care early if their children show any signs of skin problems to prevent the infection from spreading further.
