Archbishop Chong calls on Christians to work towards freedom, justice and service this Easter

Hundreds gathered at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Suva as the Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, His Grace, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong, led the Holy Thursday Mass, calling on Christians to actively work towards freedom, justice and service.

Archbishop Chong says Holy Thursday marks the most important period in the Christian calendar, focusing on the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

He highlights the significance of the Paschal mystery, describing it as a journey from slavery to freedom, sin to life, and death to eternal life.

His Grace stresses that the call to do this in memory of him is not just about remembering Jesus sacrifice, but about making it present in today’s world through action.

He says the Eucharist is not only about receiving Communion but also about serving others, showing love and standing up for justice.

Archbishop Chong also raised concern about modern forms of slavery in Fiji, including economic and social inequality, domestic and gender-based violence, and addiction to drugs, alcohol and other substances.

He adds that some cultural practices continue to marginalise women and young people.

The Archbishop is urging Christians to take responsibility in addressing these issues and to work towards freeing people from these struggles.

He emphasises that faith must be demonstrated through action, compassion and service to others.

Archbishop Chong also calls on believers to become “Easter people” by promoting freedom, justice and hope in society.

The Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva will continue its Easter Triduum program today with Good Friday observances, including Morning Prayer at 7am and the Veneration of the Cross at 3pm.

Holy Saturday will feature Morning Prayer at 7am and the Easter Vigil at 8pm, while Easter Sunday services include Eucharist celebrations at 8.30am and 10am, followed by Evening Prayer at 5pm.
