Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry says the country must prioritise the hardships facing people amid political uncertainty and the ongoing drought.
In his Diwali message, Chaudhry says the festival has, for well over a century, brought Fijians of different ethnicities and backgrounds together, making it a proud national celebration.
He says Fiji's multi-ethnic unity has always been one of the country's greatest strengths.
Chaudhry says this Diwali comes at a time when the country is facing political turbulence over the constitutional amendment process, as well as a crippling drought.
He says addressing the hardships faced by people must take priority over political manoeuvres to push through what he describes as an unpopular constitutional amendment.
Chaudhry is urging Fijians to reject divisive politics, stand together and work towards equality and national progress.
He is also reminding people to take extra care during Diwali celebrations, particularly when using fireworks and open flames, given the dry weather and drought conditions.
Chaudhry has wished all Fijians a peaceful Diwali with their loved ones and called for Lord Ram's blessings on the nation.
