The late rugby sevens and rugby league star Alifereti Dere will be laid to rest today in Nawaka, Nadi.

Dere, who played 11 Tests for the Fiji national rugby union team between 1986 and 1991, also served as captain of the Fiji national rugby sevens team.

Known for his fearless determination and leadership on the field, he was widely respected for his passion and commitment to the game.

In 2013, he coached the Fiji 7s side at the Hong Kong tournament, mentoring players such as Osea Kolinisau, Benito Masilevu, and Samisoni Viriviri, among others.

During the early 1990s, Dere played alongside the legendary Waisale Serevi and captained what many rugby pundits consider the finest Fiji 7s team of their era.

His squad featured outstanding talents including Tomasi Cama, Noa Nadruku, Mesake Rasari, Vesi Rauluni, and Pauliasi Tabulutu.

Coached by the late Kitione Vesikula, the team brought immense pride, unity, and joy to the nation.

Dere was an integral figure during Fiji’s golden era of sevens rugby in the 1990s.

His contributions as a player helped lay the foundation for the country’s enduring success and dominance on the world stage.

A respected leader and true gentleman, Dere served the game with humility and dedication.

His influence extended far beyond the try line, leaving a lasting legacy in Fijian rugby.

The funeral service will begin at 11am today in Nawaka, Nadi.

Rest in love, Dere.
