The Rewa Vutia Road Dredging Project has officially begun, marking a major step forward in improving infrastructure and connectivity for communities in the Rewa corridor.
The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by the Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau at Nabalili in Loma ni Koro, Rewa.
The Fiji Roads Authority says the project is expected to significantly improve access and transportation for 11 villages that have long faced challenges with connectivity.
They say first phase of the project will involve dredging about 500,000 cubic meters of material from selected sections of the river.
This work will prepare the foundation for the second phase, which includes the construction of a bridge scheduled to begin in January next year.
The dredging phase is expected to take between six to nine months to complete.
Ro Filipe highlighted the importance of the project, noting that communities in the area have struggled for years with accessing markets, schools, and essential services due to poor transport links.
He says the development will gradually ease these challenges, improving daily travel and creating more reliable connections for residents.
With a total estimated cost of $18.95 million, the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure and improving the quality of life for Fijians.
