Concern has been raised by residents living in the Vatia area between Tavua and Ba regarding the drugs that were found on Friday.

This has raised questions about how security at the borders is failing to detect those illegally transporting drugs to our shores.

Speaking to fijivillage News, a source who lives in the Vatia area says the discovery is frightening for residents, as drugs were found close to their homes.

He says they are worried about their children and the future generation, given the impact drugs can have on communities.

He also stated that many residents who rely on coastal fishing to provide for their families often question why the law is so strict on locals going out to fish, yet unable to detect foreigners bringing drugs into the country.

He adds that they have seen yachts docking at the Vatia Jetty and are surprised that people are not allowed to get close to the yachts.

He also says the government should pull up their socks and ensure that those responsible are detected and held accountable.

Four South American nationals and two Fijians are still in custody following an early morning drug raid in Vatia Waters on Friday.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu says more than 100 bags containing parcels believed to be cocaine were seized by officers from the Criminal Investigations Department, Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department and the Western Division Taskforce.

We have sent questions to police regarding the investigation.

They are yet to respond.
