The villages of Nanukuloa, Naiserelagi and Barotu in Ra received an early Christmas gift following the handover of three new fishing boats by the Ministry for Fisheries and Forests.
Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu says that each village was presented with a 23-foot fibreglass fishing boat, fitted with an outboard engine.
She says the aim is to strengthen fishing livelihoods and improving safety at sea.
The boats were handed over by Bainivalu, a proud daughter of Ra, during a ceremony marked by strong emotions and gratitude from villagers.
The handover was particularly historic for Naiserelagi Village, which received its first-ever boat and engine through a government initiative.
She says that the vessels were officially handed over to the Nanukuloa, Naiserelagi and Naiduvu Fishers’ Cooperatives.
Bainivalu highlights the provision of the boats was more than a donation, describing it as a strategic investment to empower fishing communities.
She adds that improved equipment would allow fishers to operate more safely and efficiently, increase their catch and improve household incomes.
The Minister also stresses the importance of sustainable fishing practices, effective qoliqoli policing and the protection of the marine environment to ensure future generations in Ra continue to benefit from ocean resources.
Calling for unity, Bainivalu encourages villagers to work together and support one another in managing the new assets.
She also urged fishers to register as cooperatives to access ongoing government support, training and resources to further develop their fishing activities.
The Minister acknowledged the villagers for their support during the last general election and reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for development initiatives that benefit communities in Ra.
The event symbolised solidarity, empowerment and hope, reflecting the Government’s continued efforts to support sustainable livelihoods and economic growth in rural fishing communities.
