President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu stresses that in addressing the rising cost of living issues, formulating just rules and policies are important, they are inclusive and well targeted and grounded in evidence.
While opening 2026 Parliament this morning, Ratu Naiqama says the Household Income and Expenditure Survey reports that prior to the pandemic, approximately one part of our population lived below the poverty line, another 25 percent facing hardship, surviving just above the poverty line, in both the urban and rural communities.
He says the Government's program for 2026 and beyond seeks not only to grow the economy, but also to create decent work, protect the vulnerable and invest in the capabilities of our people.
The President says in the formulation of programs and policies, the government will be guided by the principles of unity and diversity, that is ensuring that every citizen, regardless of background or place of residence, shares in national progress, the sustainability and resilience that is protecting our people, the economy, and the environment for the present and future generations.
Ratu Naiqama says the government will also be guided by integrity and good governance, strengthening trust in public institutions and public leadership.
He says this principle will inform the formation population of legislation, budgeted decision, institutional reform and public policy across all sectors, and will serve as the compass for national decision making in the years ahead.
