Captains of the teams participating in the 50th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s were part of a planting initiative today at the Arts Village in Pacific Harbour.

Marist Club President Lawrence Tikaram says today’s event is symbolic because they are not only planting a tree, but also planting for the future.

He says it is important to spread this message not only from a rugby point of view, but also from a corporate perspective, as everyone needs to be mindful and show respect for the environment to ensure that events like this can continue.

He also acknowledged Shore Buses Limited for providing the coaches that will transport all the captains to the Arts Village for the planting initiative.

Meanwhile, the three-day tournament will include 72 men’s teams, 12 women’s teams, 34 U21 teams, and 6 U18 boys’ and girls’ teams.

Defending men’s champions, Devo Babas, will be facing tough opponents in the tournament such as Police Blue and White, Yaro Chiefs, Army Green and Red, Ravuka Sharks, Ratu Filise Rugby, Wardens Gold and Green, Kasabias Village Boys, and Dominion Brothers.

The Marist 7s kicks off tomorrow with the women’s competition, while the men’s competition will start on Friday.

The finals will be held on Saturday.
