Maha Shivratri is not only a night of worship but a powerful reminder of honesty, humility and discipline.
Speaking to fijivillage News on the significance of the sacred occasion, Samabula Sanatan Shiv Mandir Pundit Dharmend Sharma says Lord Shiva symbolises innocence and fairness.
Sharma explains that Maha Shivratri is observed through fasting, chanting “Om Namah Shivaya”, offering milk, water, bael leaves and dhatura flowers, and performing worship over eight pahars, the traditional division of a full day and night into eight equal 3-hour time periods.

He says Lord Shiva is innocent at heart and blesses everyone without discrimination, but his stories teach that devotion must be guided by truth and humility.
Sharma shared the story of Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu, who once argued over who was supreme, and how Lord Shiva appeared before them as an endless pillar of fire and challenged them to find its limits.
He explains that while Lord Vishnu admitted he could not find the end, Lord Brahma falsely claimed he had reached the top, and that angered by the lie, Lord Shiva punished Lord Brahma, demonstrating that dishonesty and ego have consequences.
Sharma also shared the story of Bhasmasura, a demon who pleased Shiva through penance and was granted a boon to turn anyone to ashes by touching their head.
He says blinded by arrogance, Bhasmasura attempted to misuse the power, and ultimately his ego led to his destruction.
He adds that the lesson is clear, which is that power without wisdom and humility leads to downfall.
Sharma says Maha Shivratri is a time for self-reflection.
He adds that we must remove ego, speak the truth and remain disciplined, as that is the true worship of Lord Shiva.
Devotees have been visiting the temple since early this morning to offer prayers, and a special prayer will be held at 7.30pm to commemorate the holy night.
