After more than two decades without municipal polls, Fiji could see local government elections return before the end of this year.
Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa says civic awareness efforts are already underway as preparations gather pace for the long-awaited vote.
Nalumisa says indications from the Fijian Elections Office suggest the polls could be called later this year, potentially marking the first municipal elections in around 20 years.
He describes the move as a commitment the Coalition Government had made to the people of Fiji.
The Minister confirmed that legislative groundwork has already been completed, including a review of the Local Government Act to allow for the holding of elections.
He says regulations have also been amended to incorporate villages that fall within town and city boundaries.
Nalumisa stressed that restoring local government elections remains one of his top priorities as Minister, saying the reforms are aimed at ensuring inclusive representation within municipal areas.
He also dismissed suggestions of political pressure stemming from the possibility of both municipal and general elections being held in close proximity.
He says for now, attention remains focused on re-establishing elected municipal councils, a development many see as a significant step in strengthening grassroots democracy after two decades without local polls.
