In a unique celebration of iTaukei culture and maritime heritage, the island of Fulaga will host the inaugural Fulaga Traditional Canoe Race on January 1st 2026.
Event organiser Talei Draunibaka says the occassion will bring together the four villages of Muanaicake, Muanaira, Naividamu, and Ogea in Lau in a celebration dedicated to the preservation of traditional canoe-building and navigation knowledge that has been passed down through generations.
Draunibaka says the event seeks to safeguard the cultural legacy of the Na Drua and Na Camakau, two iconic double-hulled canoes that hold deep significance for the people of Fulaga.
Recognised as one of the last communities with direct knowledge of building these vessels, she says the men of Fulaga have become the custodians of this ancient craft, which is integral to their identity and way of life.
She says the race will also be a vital educational process, with elders and master builders working hand in hand with the youth to transfer their knowledge of canoe construction, navigation, and the rich oral traditions associated with the craft.
Beyond the race itself, Draunibaka adds the event fosters strengthened bonds between the villages, creating opportunities for the community to come together and celebrate their shared cultural practices.
She says it will also leave behind a documented record of the skills and stories transferred during the process, which will be preserved for future generations and for the benefit of cultural researchers.
