The Ministry of Environment is investigating a suspected fuel spill near the China Club in Nasese.
This follows serious concerns raised by Reverend James Bhagwan about the extent of the spill.
The Ministry says inspectors, in collaboration with officers from Fiji Ports Limited, conducted an on-site boat inspection and used drone surveillance to assess the level of pollution and identify its possible source.
They say, as is often the case, the fuel slick was washed away by the incoming tide.
The Ministry confirms the investigation is ongoing and that they are closely monitoring the area for any further signs of pollution.
Interagency cooperation is also underway, with the Ministry working alongside Fiji Ports Limited and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji to trace the source of the reported slick.
The Ministry is urging all businesses and vessel operators to exercise extra care when handling fuel, oil, and other hazardous substances to prevent pollution of waterways and the marine environment.
As the country heads into the holiday season, the Ministry says it will continue to treat all pollution reports with urgency and coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure prompt investigations and effective response measures.
The Ministry is also acknowledging members of the public who report environmental concerns, saying such reports are vital to their work and ability to respond swiftly.
They add that they remain committed to protecting Fiji’s marine environment and are encouraging the public to report any suspected pollution incidents immediately.
