As Indo-Fijians around the country celebrate Ram Naumi, growing concerns over drug abuse and violence have taken centre stage during this year’s observance.
The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji is urging communities to reflect not only on spiritual values but also on pressing social issues.
National Secretary, Pt Krishneel Krishan Tiwari says that this sacred period holds immense spiritual significance for the Hindu community, commemorating the birth of Lord Ram and promoting the values of righteousness, unity, and moral living.
He says that throughout the week, various religious, cultural, and community-based programmes are being conducted across Sanatan branches in Fiji, including Ramayan recitals, satsangs, processions, and youth engagements.
He adds that, in line with this year’s broader message of building a resilient and responsible society, strong emphasis is being placed on addressing the growing concerns of drug abuse and violence within communities.
Tiwari is urging all branches to incorporate awareness discussions and messages during Ram Naumi programmes to educate devotees, especially youths, on the harmful effects of substance abuse and the importance of peaceful living.
To ensure the safety and well-being of all devotees during this important religious period, the Sabha has formally requested the Fiji Police Force to increase patrols and provide necessary security at major celebration venues throughout the country.
Additionally, a formal request has been submitted to the Suva City Council for arrangements for flower dispersal this Friday after 12pm, marking the culmination of the Ram Naumi celebrations in Suva.
The Sanatan Sabha is calling upon all devotees and the wider community to participate actively and responsibly in the celebrations, while upholding the true teachings of Lord Ram, who stands for peace, discipline, compassion, and respect for all.
They say that this Ram Naumi should not only be a time of devotion but also a moment for reflection and collective action towards building a safer and stronger Fiji.
