Court to rule on Thakor Punja’s bail variation next Friday

The bail variation ruling for Thakor Punja has been set for next Friday, as he wishes to travel to Australia for spinal surgery and disc replacement.

State witness and CWM Medical Superintendent, Dr Luke Nasedra, informed Magistrate Yogesh Prasad that the operation is not available in Fiji, but arrangements can be made with overseas consultants.

Defence lawyer Samuela Heritage asked whether these consultants are always available to provide their opinion.

The Medical Superintendent responded that they can give their opinion based on their availability.

Based on his medical experience, Dr Nasedra says that Punja’s condition is not life-threatening, as such cases need to be dealt within 48 hours.

He adds that there are a few orthopedic specialists available in Fiji who can also provide their opinion.

Dr Nasedra agrees that if the condition is not treated, it can worsen.

Punja requires surgery after he was involved in an accident in April last year.

Punja is charged with three counts of unlawful possession of illicit drugs.
