Fijians Jona Nareki, Timoci Tavatavanawai, and Veveni Lasaqa were unable to guide their side to victory in a heated clash against the Chiefs in Round Two of the Super Rugby Pacific.

Despite Nareki crossing for the opening try, as the hosts eventually fell 26–23 in a tightly fought encounter.

Nareki gave the Highlanders the ideal start, finishing off a slick move after a pinpoint cut-out pass from Folau Fakatava created space out wide.

The Highlanders played with heavy hearts following the tragic passing of prop Angus Ta’avao’s young son, Leo. A touching tribute was held before kickoff in his memory.

The result marked the Chiefs’ eighth consecutive win over the Highlanders and gave them two impressive away victories to open their campaign.

The Chiefs held a 14–7 lead at halftime, but the second half saw both teams trade blows in an evenly matched contest, with statistics reflecting how closely fought the game was.

However, the visitors spoiled the chance of an emotional home victory, adding 12 points after the break while the Highlanders managed 16.

In other results, the Blues defeated the Western Force 42–32.

The Crusaders will face the Brumbies today at 2.35pm.
