Drivers have been issued a stern warning to change their attitude on the road, as speeding kills and destroys lives, families and bright futures.
Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva highlighted this as speeding remains the single greatest cause of fatal accidents in Fiji.
Tuinaceva says that to support safer roads, the Government is installing 14 static speed cameras that will rotate across 31 high-risk sites, and 12 portable cameras distributed across the Central (4), Western (5), and Northern (3) Divisions.
He says these measures aim to deter reckless driving and enforce compliance. The Assistant Minister says technology and enforcement can only go so far.
Tuinaceva says that this is a call to all drivers to slow down and protect their lives and the lives of others.
Meanwhile, the Ministry, in partnership with the Land Transport Authority is reviewing penalties for speeding and traffic offences to ensure sanctions are strong enough to act as a real deterrent.
Tuinaceva says the rising number of Traffic Infringement Notices issued shows a worrying pattern of disregard for road rules.
The Minister further says that the growing number of TINs reflects that there is still a long way to go in changing mindsets.
He adds that safe driving is not optional; it is a moral and civic duty.
