Bau chiefs stress discipline and alcohol control ahead of New Year celebrations

Bau chiefs stress discipline and alcohol control ahead of New Year celebrations

As the chiefly island of Bau prepares for the celebration of New Year’s Eve, all the men of the Yavusa Kubuna in the Village of Bau have visited Yavusa Nabou in the village of Lasakau and Yavusa Rara in the village of Soso to stress the importance of maintaining village rules during this festive season.

Chief herald of the Turaga Bale na Vunivalu, the Turaga na Tunitoga, Ratu Aisea Jack Komaitai, says these visits to each village are vital in highlighting the importance of the proper use of alcohol during the New Year period.

He says this includes drinking responsibly, avoiding unnecessary noise in the village, and not being rowdy, as such behaviour is not acceptable under village law and the Bauan way of life.

Ratu Aisea also explains to the young villagers that village laws regarding drugs remain firmly in place and will be strictly upheld throughout the festive season.

He adds that they strongly believe irresponsible behaviour contributes to the increasing number of HIV cases in Fiji.
