Epeli Laqeni
The bail hearing for the man who allegedly killed his de-facto partner in Nakasi between 3rd and 5th September, 2025, will be held on 10th February.

Epeli Laqeni appeared before High Court Judge Justice Usaia Ratuvili, charged with one count of murder.

Defence lawyer Timoci Varinava told the court that the defence has the medical report and the Human Rights report.

He said with the receipt of these documents, they will be filing for bail tomorrow.

State lawyer Naazish Ali said the medical report states that the doctor did not see Laqeni, but compiled the report from documents provided to him.

She also highlighted that staff nurses at the Remand Centre noted that Laqeni can stand when he showers, and that his hands, arms, and feet were fully healed.

Ali said the State wants a medical report prepared by doctors at CWM Hospital, rather than one prepared by a doctor based on documents and observations.

Varinava informed the court that the medical report was from CWM Hospital and prepared by Doctor Alipate.

He said that even though Laqeni can stand, he cannot walk.

Justice Ratuvili then told the defence counsel to apply for fresh bail by Friday, and for the State to respond by 6th February.
