Women artists are boldly reshaping Fiji’s creative landscape, stepping into spaces long dominated by men and asserting their voices through powerful, boundary-pushing work.
In celebration of the University of Fiji’s 21st birthday, the Women’s Avant-Garde Art Exhibition lit up UniFiji Central in Suva, offering a vibrant and thought-provoking showcase of talent, innovation and the evolving role of women in the arts.
The exhibition brought together 10 dynamic female artists whose work challenges traditional norms and redefines the conventional gallery experience.
Through experimental textiles, expansive visual landscapes and kinetic concepts, the showcase presents a radical vision of art that explores the boundaries of humanity, space and identity.
Speaking at the event, award-winning contemporary artist Mason James Lee acknowledged the importance of creating platforms for women in a field that has long been male-dominated.
He notes that such initiatives are vital in helping women recognise their creative potential and build the confidence to express themselves freely, without limitation.
He says the showcase is not only about artistic display but also about reshaping the local art narrative.
By encouraging critical dialogue and supporting emerging talent through the UniFiji Physical Gallery, Lee says the initiative reinforces the idea that innovation is thriving within Fiji’s women’s creative community.
