Legendary long-distance runner Usaia Sotutu has been honoured today at a special function celebrating his remarkable achievements and lasting impact on athletics in Fiji.
Sotutu still holds Fiji national records in the 3,000 metres and 3,000-metre steeplechase, is the all-time top Pacific Island athlete in steeplechase, and held the 10,000-metre national record for 54 years until it was broken this year by Yeshnil Karan.
The event, hosted by the Fiji Sports Council in partnership with Athletics Fiji, brought together fellow athletes, officials and supporters to recognise Sotutu’s contribution to the sport and his role in inspiring generations of Fijian runners.
Speaking to fijivillage Sports, 80-year-old Sotutu says the occasion was deeply meaningful, particularly the opportunity to reconnect with former teammates and share the moment with current athletes.
Sotutu says the celebration also shows that people still care about those who have represented Fiji in the past.
He used the occasion to encourage continued support for young athletes, stressing the importance of guidance, preparation and belief.
He is also encouraging retired athletes to continue contributing to the sport and community development by mentoring upcoming athletes.
Sotutu says young athletes must remain disciplined and committed to improving themselves in their chosen events.
Usaia Sotutu competed in an era when Fiji had limited access to high-performance support, yet through discipline, resilience and determination, he set standards that inspired generations of athletes who followed.
He first announced himself on the regional stage at the 1966 South Pacific Games in Noumea, winning a gold and a silver medal, signalling Fiji’s emergence as a competitive force in distance running.
Across his career, Sotutu became one of the most prolific athletes in South Pacific Games history.
He dominated the 3,000-metre steeplechase, winning gold medals in Noumea in 1966, Port Moresby in 1969 and Tahiti in 1971, before adding silver medals in Guam in 1975 and Suva in 1979.
In the 10,000 metres, he won gold medals in 1969 and 1971, along with additional silver and bronze medals across multiple Games.
He claimed gold in the 5,000 metres in 1971 and later added a gold medal in the 1,500 metres in 1975, followed by a silver in 1979.
At the 1971 South Pacific Games, Sotutu delivered one of the finest performances by a Fijian athlete, winning an extraordinary four gold medals, a defining moment in Fiji’s sporting history.
In recognition of his achievements, Sotutu was selected to represent Fiji at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where he competed in the 3,000-metre steeplechase and the 5,000 metres alongside fellow athletics legend Samuela Yavala.
Sotutu still holds Fiji national records in the 3,000 metres and the 3,000-metre steeplechase and remains the all-time number one Pacific Island athlete in the steeplechase.
