With Hindus around Fiji celebrating the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri today, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, Charan Jeath Singh is calling on religious leaders and communities to use the sacred occasion to address the growing threat of drug use among Fiji’s youth.
Singh says today’s holy night is dedicated to Lord Shiva, symbolising reflection, discipline, self-control and renewal.
He says the festival reminds us of inner strength and the triumph of good over harmful influences, values that are especially important for young people facing social pressures.
He is encouraging faith-based gatherings to guide and mentor youth through sermons, discussions and programmes that raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and promote wise, responsible choices.
The Minister says that by speaking openly about substance abuse and encouraging healthy lifestyles, we can collectively safeguard the future of our children.
He adds that may the blessings of Lord Shiva guide us towards wisdom, unity and strength as we build a safer and more compassionate Fiji for all.
