World Rugby is investigating a photo of South African Rugby World Cup referee Jaco Peyper which has sparked anger.

Peyper posed for a photo with Wales fans in which he appeared to mimic the elbow that led to French player Sebastien Vahaamahina's quarter-final red card.

Rugby.com.au reports Peyper was seen smiling for the camera alongside beer-drinking Wales fans with his right elbow raised to the chin of one of them, seeming to poke fun at the incident on Sunday night.

World Rugby said it is aware of the picture and they are establishing the facts.

The All Blacks will face England at 8pm this Saturday in the first semifinal while Wales will take on South Africa at 9pm this Sunday in the second semifinal.
