National Federation Party Leader and Acting Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad says NFP has existed for more than 60 years because they believe in certain principles and are united in those beliefs.
While speaking at the NFP Convention at the Labasa Civic Centre, Professor Prasad says the turnout today shows the strength and resilience of their party because they all believe in something bigger than themselves.
Speaking on the last elections, Professor Prasad says the people threw out the FijiFirst Party, and now that party has vanished into the dustbin of history.
He also highlighted that they are dealing with many issues after a long period of neglect, and the Government is burdened by debt.
The NFP Leader says our basic infrastructure, including roads and water supplies, is fragile.
He adds they are facing up to these issues now and are bringing the facts to the people, as they do not want to hide, and ensure that our people are aware of the challenges ahead.
Professor Prasad says they are fixing our health centres, hospitals, nursing stations, rural and feeder roads, and water boreholes to increase the supply of clean drinking water for our people.
He says the cost of living continues to be the people’s biggest burden, and it is difficult to bring down prices.
The NFP Leader says they believe in lifting income, and for seven months in a row, the rate of inflation has been decreasing.
Professor Prasad says they know that there are extremists on all sides of politics who do not share their vision of a secure, multiracial, and multireligious collective future.
He says they have seen criminals who attack places of worship, who express hateful views on social media.
The Acting Prime Minister says the 2013 Constitution remains a fraudulent and discredited document.
He says the people who drafted it wrote it for themselves and also tried to lock it up forever, with rigid rules about how it could be amended – a three-quarters majority in Parliament and then three-quarters of all voters in a referendum.
Professor Prasad says the Constitution was imposed on us without consultation, but in a real democracy, the people always come first.
He adds that it is the right of the people if they want to change their constitution, as long as they follow fair and reasonable processes.
The Acting Prime Minister also revealed that sometime between August 2026 and February 2027, we will be going into elections.
He says they are not getting too excited about all of that as they have their work to do in the Government.
Professor Prasad says they are actively looking for candidates who share their basic values of human rights, democratic accountability, and public service.
