Weightlifting Fiji to hold competition this weekend for youth and junior members

With less than five weeks before the beginning of the weightlifting competition at the 2022 Mini Pacific games in Saipan, Northern Marianas, Weightlifting Fiji’s Youth and Junior members have a timely online competition tomorrow and Sunday at the Fiji Sports Council’s National Fitness Centre.

The Youth and Junior championships is usually held concurrently with the Oceania Senior Championships which this year will be held together with the Pacific Mini Games.

IWF sanctioned Virtual Online Championships are run almost the same as a normal competition with three nominated category 1 referees, an official timekeeper, official weigh-ins on credible and calibrated scales and run in the normal competition format and organization Weightlifting Fiji is fielding a team of 7 women and 6 men for a total of 15 youth and junior athletes.

Out of these 4 men and 5 women are part of the Mini-Games squad.

Weightlifting Fiji’s Vice president and Assistant Coach Eremasi Qalibau has been training the Levuka team members while the Suva and the lone Serua athlete is coached by national Head Coach Henry Elder at the National Fitness centre.

The team marches into camp at the Suva Apartments this afternoon in preparation for the Championships.

The team consists of students from Gospel High School, Levuka Public School, Delana Methodist, Suva Grammar School, Saint Joseph’s Secondary School and CMF Secondary.

Elder is inviting members of the public to support their young athletes who hail for Cakaudrove, Ra, Kadavu, Lau, Lomaiviti, Naitasiri, Rewa and Tailevu.

Entry is fee to watch the Championships at the national fitness centre.
