Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar

Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar says they are faced with a two-edge sword where they have less revenue and more demand for funding.

Kumar highlighted this while opening the monthly Municipal Councils Chief Executives Forum.

Kumar says the monthly forum is important as it ensures the CEOs are properly briefed and contribute to the latest policy changes and reforms planned for municipal councils.

She says new processes are in place to ensure that all major building approvals are fast-tracked.

The Minister says the Forum allows the Heads of the Organisations to share concerns and challenges as well as good practices.

Kumar adds the Ministry of Local Government is also planning to implement the Greater Suva Waste Management Service where Lami, Suva, Nasinu and Nausori Municipal Councils will have a jointly owned company which will look after their waste collection services.
