Health Minister Doctor Ifereimi Waqainabete has thanked Suva Zone II Senior Boys 100 metres winner Tevita Sokiveta of Suva Grammar School for being an inspiration.

Sokiveta who has Rheumatic Heart Disease dedicated his win to all those living with Rheumatic Heart Disease in the country.

Sokiveta said he wanted to win the race to show everyone with Rheumatic Heart Disease that nothing is impossible with hardwork and belief in God.

While congratulating Sokiveta for his achievement on Twitter, the Health Minister thanked Sokiveta’s family and parents for their support.

Waqainabete also thanked the Fiji Rheumatic Heart Disease Control Program as well as the Ministry of Health staff that were involved in the growth of Sokiveta.

The Fiji Rheumatic Heart Disease Control Program also wrote on Twitter that the community of people living with Rheumatic Heart Disease were super proud of Sokiveta’s gold medal win.

They went on to say that it is encouraging to see Sokiveta doing his bit in raising awareness about Rheumatic Heart Disease.

Rheumatic Heart Disease is a significant health problem in Fiji, and approximately one child in every classroom is living with Rheumatic Heart Disease in the country.

At least 60 deaths a year are attributed to Rheumatic Heart Disease in Fiji.
