Fijians turn out in numbers to register to ensure they can have their say

People registering to vote at the FEO tent at Rups, Nakasi today. Voter registration has now closed.

Voter Registration for the 2022 General Elections has closed.

As at 28th October, 692,918 Fijians have registered to vote.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem says if you were not able to update your address on the voter card, you can still vote via postal voting.

He says since Saturday they have done 803 new registrations and over 6,500 Fijians upgraded to the latest blue voter card.

Saneem adds that in a few days, they will release the provisional voter numbers for the 2022 General Elections.

Saneem says they continued to do registration for Fijians who entered the queue before 6pm.

Meanwhile, Fijians turned out in numbers at various centres around the Suva to Nausori corridor as they took advantage of it being the last day to get registered to vote for the 2022 General Elections.

While some were registering to vote for the first time, some were taking the time to replace lost cards or updating their cards from green to the new blue cards.

Krishant Sami of Lovu Lautoka says he came to update his card and had taken some time out from work to get this done.

Pranil Kumar who is a carpenter by profession says he has taken time out from work as well to get his details sorted and he says people should register. Insert: We are Fijians Oct 31st

Saula Mule of Namadi says he has just returned to Fiji and heard on the news that he cannot use his green card so he came to upgrade to the blue card and also change his address.

Mule says only the men in their family had not updated their cards which is why they all were there.

Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem stresses the green voter card has expired and is not a valid card however, if you turn up to the right polling station on election day, you will be treated as a person who did not bring a valid ID and they will be able to ask you some questions to verify that it is you on the voter list and you will be able to vote.

Timoci Nacolatabisa of Tovata says the reason he left it till today was because he was admitted in hospital for most of this year.

Nacolatabisa says he is finally recovered enough to walk and has made his way to Makoi to update his voter card from green to blue, and also to check if his polling venue has changed.
