Tropical Cyclone Gita hits Tonga overnight destroying and flooding homes

Tropical Cyclone Gita causing flash flooding in Tonga

Tropical Cyclone Gita hit Tonga overnight, destroying a church and homes and sending roofs flying.

Radio NZ is reporting that there are unconfirmed reports of two deaths.

The roof of the Tonga Weather Office in Tongatapu has been ripped off with equipment affected and offices evacuated.

The national radio station is also off air.

A state of emergency has been declared to help prevent loss of life and damage to property.

Many landmark buildings in the Capital Nuku'alofa has been severely damaged.

 

Power has also been turned off for 75,000 residents in Tongatapu.
