Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says there is not a single Fijian doctor who can carry out open heart surgery in Fiji and we need to ask why this is happening.

Sayed-Khaiyum says more importantly, we need to ask what can be done to ensure we have doctors to do these surgeries, the policy steps that are being taken and available opportunities.

He highlighted this during the International Youth Day celebration at Suva Civic Centre yesterday.

He says 70% of the population is below the age of 40 while 65% is below the age of 65 and as a Government, they need to ensure the vast majority have access to education, services and jobs.

Sayed-Khaiyum says they have to be able to provide the right environment to create jobs and access to medical services.

He adds they also have to ensure young people feel secure in the system and understand the economy.

Sayed-Khaiyum says we cannot talk about issues, jobs, opportunities, inclusiveness, empowering women and youth if we do not understand how the economy works.
