Permanent Secretary for Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport Shaheen Ali.

The impact of digital technology in revolutionizing and transforming the way we think has been accelerated due to lockdowns and restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was highlighted by the Permanent Secretary for Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport Shaheen Ali to mark the World Metrology Day.

Ali says the past two years have made us even more aware of harnessing technology.

He says metrology plays a fundamental role in international trade and is almost impossible to describe anything without referring to weights and measures.

Ali says we cannot imagine a world without measurement and simply put, economies will not be able to function without it and trade will be unbalanced.

He says therefore, it is critical that measurement and its interrelated components such as standardization and calibration are able to serve the modern market.

Ali adds Fiji, as the regional hub for trade, transportation and communication will set the foundation for the region to evolve from a traditional metrology system to robust, modern and effective system.
