Telecom Fiji to bring high-speed fibre connectivity to the North

People in the Northern Division will soon enjoy faster and more reliable internet, as Telecom Fiji is bringing high-speed fibre connectivity to the region.

The company has launched a new backbone fibre network powered by Ciena’s 5184 routers, aiming to connect homes, schools, and businesses in remote areas that previously relied on weak and weather-affected microwave links.

This project is part of Telecom Fiji’s five-year fibre investment plan to build a strong and scalable national network.

A key element of this plan is the Savusavu to Labasa Fibre Project, which extends from the Savusavu submarine cable landing station through key exchanges in Savusavu, Seaqaqa, and Labasa; this fibre link creates a high-capacity, reliable data corridor that improves network performance and supports sustained economic and social growth across the region.

The new fibre line will boost internet speed and reliability, supporting education, business, and social development in the North.

Telecom Fiji’s Chief Technology Officer, Mesake Tuinabua says their goal is to connect areas that have been left behind, and this project marks an important step.

He adds that the next focus will be on extending the network so that more communities can benefit.

To prepare for the future, Telecom Fiji will also deploy Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Nano (WL5n) technology, which delivers faster data speeds and improved energy efficiency.

Ciena’s Regional Managing Director, Phil Rolle says this upgrade reflects their joint commitment with Telecom Fiji to close the digital divide and build a future-ready network that provides people across Fiji with access to fast and reliable internet.
