The iTaukei Land Trust Board is continuing its tree planting exercise at various locations around the country.

CEO Tevita Kuruvakadua says they approached Mataqali Navunuma and Mataqali Nadukece of Koroua in Nadi, Sovi and Yalavou villages in Nadroga to use part of the sites.

Kuruvakadua says they gave up their land for reforestation.

He says they managed to take 1,050 pine trees to plant on that land while 1,000 pine trees have been planted at Nayagoyago, Naikabula for Mataqali Ketenatukani.

The 4 Million Trees in 4 Years Initiative was launched by President Jioji Konusi Konrote in January 2019.

This year the initiative has been upgraded and is now known as the 30 Million Trees in 15 Years.

About $2 million is allocated for Reforestation of Degraded Forests Programme in the 2020-2021 budget which will enable the Ministry of Forestry to scale up its efforts towards the planting of “30 Million Trees in 15 Years”.

It will also see the implementation of the Cash for Tree Planting Programme which provides the opportunity for Fijians who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 to earn some cash by planting trees in their communities.
