Suva businessman calls for increased police presence after $15,000 restaurant robbery

Suva businessman calls for increased police presence after $15,000 restaurant robbery

A concerned Suva businessman is calling for police officers to be stationed in tents throughout Suva City, as was done previously, after $15,000 was stolen from a prominent restaurant in the city.

Maya Dhaba Manager, Dilbag Singh, says the restaurant was closed at 10pm on Sunday and when staff returned yesterday, they found the curtains down, bottles and bags scattered around, and their liquor cabinet empty.

Singh says the kitchen and back door had been broken open while the restaurant’s main office, located upstairs, was ransacked, with approximately $15,000 in cash stolen.

He says a CCTV camera decoder was also missing, and liquor worth about $2,500 had been taken.

He believes the robbers may have had prior knowledge of the restaurant’s layout.

The restaurant manager says they are concerned about their safety following recent brawls in the city, stating that even walking the streets during the day feels unsafe.

He also voiced concerns that the increasing crime rate is making the country unsuitable for business.

Singh, who has been operating his business in Fiji for the past 18 years, is urging police to increase patrols in the city and monitor individuals who appear to be loitering without purpose.

He is also calling for the reinstatement of a police post at the Carnegie Library car park, as the police cannot be stationed outside clubs and businesses around the clock.

While responding to questions by fijivillage News, police confirmed that the matter was reported yesterday and an initial investigation is underway.

They are yet to respond to the concerns and requests raised by the restaurant manager.
