Nasinu Town Council signed an outsourcing Memorandum of Understanding today with the Suva City Council.

Good news for the ratepayers of Nasinu as they can now expect improved waste collection services after the Nasinu Town Council signed an outsourcing Memorandum of Agreement today with the Suva City Council.

This means the SCC will now conduct waste collection in the greater Nasinu area.

While speaking at the signing, Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar says the MOA will enable Nasinu residents, businesses and informal settlements to receive regular and efficient waste collection services.

She says under this agreement, waste collection services will continue for Nasinu three times weekly for household kitchen waste, monthly for green waste and quarterly for white goods.

Kumar says the first of its kind agreement will also ensure that Nasinu ratepayers will receive the same high-level service as currently received in Suva.

She says the cost of services shall be met by the Nasinu Town Council with the financial assistance from the government.

Kumar says this exercise will start next Monday and government will subsidise $1.6 million for the starting phase.

The Chairman of the Nasinu Town Council Special Administrators, Baskaran Nair confirms the total cost of this exercise is just over $2.4 million.

Kumar says this agreement has come about because of poor waste collection services provided by the Nasinu Town Council.

The Minister has also urged all Nasinu residents and businesses to strictly follow the time table for the collection of waste and not to pile up rubbish outside the published schedule for collection.

She says non-adherence to collection schedule resulted in waste pile up in the past.

Kumar has also reminded the Nasinu ratepayers who have not paid their town rates and garbage fees to make arrangements with the Council for payment.
