A pub test will be factored by Super Rugby Pacific bosses when they conduct a post-season review of the competition’s contentious new play-offs system, which sees the Chiefs hosting the Brumbies in a semi-final this weekend despite losing at the weekend.
Super Rugby Pacific chief executive Jack Mesley says he was aware of the criticism, and it would be factored into a post-season review.
Mesley says they will definitely conduct a review, and clearly, with the in-practice versus on-paper difference, new things are always learnt, and by seeing people’s responses to it.
He says part of that review will be them looking at how complicated the structure was, as there was also discussion last week around the scheduling, and if they can do it in a way that makes the most of every match.
He adds Super Rugby has had a lot of changes over its 30 years, so he is conscious of the fact they would need very good reasons to change it because they constantly change Super Rugby, which makes it difficult for people to stay abreast of and to stay focused on.
Mesley says having said that, if through the review it comes out that it doesn’t make sense, then they will have those discussions, and they will do that in partnerships with the clubs and the broadcasters, and they will obviously also take into consideration that public response, too.
The Blues will take on the Crusaders at 7.05pm Friday in the first semi final in Christchurch.
In the second semi final, the Chiefs will host the Brumbies at 7.05pm Saturday in Hamilton.
